Thesis Title: Inhabiting Broxmouth: Domestic Architecture and Everday Life in Scottish Iron Age

Ian Armit; Jo McKenzie

About

I am currently studying Iron Age roundhouses in south-eastern Scotland as part of my collaborative doctoral award with the Broxmouth Project at the University of Bradford. This project is jointly funded by AHRC and Historic Scotland and is due for completion in 2012. I am particularly interested in the ways in which roundhouses both structured and reflected the everyday lives of their inhabitants, and am using the site of Broxmouth in East Lothian to conduct a detailed study of Iron Age domestic architecture which I will then compare with other well excavated sites in the region.

Prior to embarking on my PhD I completed an MA in Medieval Archaeology, with a dissertation focusing on the Portable Antiquties Scheme Anglo-Saxon brooch collection from the Eastern Midlands, at the Univeristy of York (2006-2007) and a BSc in Archaeology at UCL (2003-2006). I have also undertaken an IFA (HLF funded) training placement in Commercial Field Archaeology (with a focus on Industrial/ Historical Archaeology) with ARCUS, University of Sheffield (2008) and was one of the first participants to complete an NVQ in Field Archaeology.

So, as you can see, my research background has been quite eclectic. My main focus of current research however is all things buildings (particularly 1st mil BC-AD)!
